I Don't Want To Live On The Moon

One of Tod’s favorite moments from Sesame Street was when Ernie sang “I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon,” about his desire to visit the moon someday, but ultimately deciding he wouldn’t want to live there because he’d miss his family. It’s one of the rare times when Ernie appears in full, and seeing him kick his feet swimming underwater was such a thrill.

When he started performing the song live, he noticed how deeply it moved people in the audience. “With the current polarization in the country, I think it’s a perfect time to release this song. We’re so consumed by discord and constant negativity, and we could all use a little magic in our hearts again.” When performing it live, adults and children alike had a little twinkle in their eye while listening and would approach Tod after to tell him how moved they were by the song, whether they remembered it was originally from Sesame Street or not.

The song was engineered, mixed, and produced by Steven McManus, who Tod has performed with many times over the years. The two have often played the song together, with Steven on fiddle and his daughter, Kelby, singing harmonies. For this recording, they each recorded sections in their own respective studios, emailing parts back and forth and talking over Zoom until they got it just right.

“I’ve carried the memory of the song with me over the years and I’ve always wanted to do my own version and share it with a wider audience. I’m happy to finally have that opportunity.”
